Kybella FAQ

Kybella (deoxycholic acid), which is FDA approved, targets mild-to-moderate fat under the chin. It was created based off of the body’s own natural substance, called deoxycholic acid which absorbs fat. Kybella mimics the body’s natural substance to help aid in the diminishing of double chin fat.
This injectable works under the chin to reduce fat cells. It is administered to decrease the appearance of a double chin. It destroys any fat at the injection site, rendering the cell incapable of producing or carrying fat once more. Despite the effectiveness of Kybella in getting rid of double chin; it has not been FDA approved for uses on other parts of the body.
Kybella is administered via injection by a healthcare professional under the chin. It then takes effect by targeting the fat cells, breaking down and absorbing the fat under the chin. Once the cells have been treated with Kybella, they are no longer able to hold or carry fat. This ensures that the appearance of a double chin for a second time will be unlikely to reappear.
Kybella is administered via a licensed medical professional, in a series of treatment sessions on a person to person basis. The treatments can range from upwards to six sessions, during which fifty injections may be given. It is suggested that you consult with your health professional prior to, in order to figure out the appropriate amount of sessions. Prior to the injections a topical numbing medicine or ice pack will be given to ease pain beforehand. For the best treatment, do not space your sessions more than one month apart.
The results of Kybella are typically immediate after the first couple injections. After the first two to three treatments, patients often see a change in the appearance of their chin. They often note that the skin under the chin appears tighter and firmer. This gives the appearance of a more youthful looking face. After the appropriate amount of treatments, Kybella lasts for at least a few years. This means that touch ups won’t be needed as quickly and patients often don’t have to worry about how effective the drug is.
The common side effects of Kybella are pain, swelling, bleeding, discoloration of skin, itching, lumps, rash, redness bruising, hives, stinging, tightness of skin, possible numbness or even hardening of the treated area. These are to be expected and are likely not cause for too much concern. However, if in the aftermath of taking Kybella, you experience trouble swallowing, weak muscles in your face or a crooked smile. It is advised that you contact your doctor at once, as this may be a sign of complications with the drug.
