Wrinkles are one rite of passage that no one looks forward to. But what causes wrinkles? Here are 6 common causes of wrinkles and what you can do to prevent them.

What causes wrinkles

Unfortunately this is one cause of wrinkles that we don’t have much control over. Science has suggested that our genes do play a role in determining when we start seeing wrinkles on our face. Luckily, this is only one small factor, and by taking good care of our skin we can limit its effect on our skin.

Environmental factors, such as sun exposure, air pollution and chemicals in our food can increase the number of free radicals in our skin. These free radicals damage the DNA in our skin cells and cause our skin to lose firmness and elasticity prematurely, leading to the formation of wrinkles. Eating an antioxidant-rich diet and investing in quality sun protection can help to combat free radicals and keep your skin smooth and crease free.

Just like everything else in your body, the quality of your skin is also linked with the quality of your diet. Eating lots of sugary foods can break down collagen and cause your skin to lose its firmness and elasticity. On the other hand, eating enough fruits and veggies is essential to introduce the antioxidants and nutrients that your body needs to keep your skin looking its best.

Sleeping Position

Believe it or not, even your sleeping position can cause facial wrinkles. If you sleep on your side or stomach with your face pressed into your pillow, the creases on your sheets can create lines on your face and eventually exacerbate wrinkles. Dermatologists suggest sleeping on your back to combat this. If that isn’t an option however, investing in silk or satin pillowcases or a specially designed “anti-wrinkle” pillow can also help minimize the lines and creases on your face.

Certain habits, such as smoking and excessive alcohol intake, can also prematurely age your skin. Both tobacco and alcohol can limit the amount of oxygen and nutrients that reach your skin cells, lowering the skin’s ability to fight infections and free radicals. In addition, the repeated pursing of your lips when smoking can lead to vertical lips lines. Stopping smoking and limiting your alcohol intake can help combat this.

Facial Expressions

Frequent movement of certain facial muscles can also cause wrinkles to be etched into our faces. Repeated and exaggerated expressions can cause grooves to form under the skin and eventually reduce the skin’s elasticity and ability to spring back. Muscle inhibitors, such as Botox, are designed to help relax muscles and smooth away these lines and wrinkles.
