Age Spot Removal. Aging has three main factors: genetics, time and environment.  While you can’t change what kind of skin you inherit or the number of years on your calendar, Intense Pulsed Light™ (IPL) treatments can dramatically improve appearance by removing visible cues like age spots. Protocol varies according to the individual, but on the average, expect 2-6 treatments scheduled at approximately 3-4-week intervals.  Age spots darken temporarily after treatment, then slough off in a matter of days, revealing smoother, more even skin tone and a more youthful appearance.

IPL uses light energy to reverse the visible damage that skin has suffered from chronic sun exposure, smoking, irregular blood vessels and environmental wear and tear. It can also help by stimulating collagen production in the deep layers of the dermis to smooth the skin surface and minimize fine lines and wrinkles.

Lumenis IPL.  The beauty of skin, restored.  Intense Pulsed Light™ (IPL) is a breakthrough age spot treatment that can address numerous skin conditions, without injuring the skin’s surface.  IPL offers a gentle, long-lasting solution for visible signs of skin damage that affect the way you look.  It also combines dramatic improvement with virtually no down time. • Protective eyewear is given to the patient.
  • A topical anesthetic may be applied to the skin for added comfort during the procedure.
  • A cooling gel, which reduces the sensation of heat from the hand piece, is applied to the treatment area.
  • Cold air cooling to the skin may also be given during treatment
  • The smooth glass surface of the IPL hand piece is placed directly over the treatment area.
  • Precisely calibrated light waves, which vary in intensity according to the type of skin, the location of the treatment area and treatment type, and the depth of energy penetration required for optimal results, are emitted by the hand piece.
  • Treatment continues over a single, specified area (face, legs, neck, or arms) with a series of brief, even passes.
  • After 10 – 20 minutes, the session is complete. The patient may experience a slight redness to the treatment area, which usually disappears in an hour.
  • Over a series of treatments (usually 2-6, at 3-4-week intervals) the treatment area becomes clear of spots, birthmarks, discoloration or unwanted veins1.

What are IPL Skin Treatments?

IPL is a non-ablative, non-invasive procedure that uses controlled light in specific wavelengths to restore the smooth, even texture your skin had before exposure to sun and other environmentally damaging factors. Lumenis IPL has been cleared by the FDA since 1995.

What are the advantages of IPL for age spot treatment?

IPL is gentle and safe, and it effectively treats multiple symptoms and locations in each session. It is an in-office procedure, and virtually no down time is required. IPL is a remarkably quick way to rejuvenate your complexion by removing the spots, discolorations and unwanted pigment that affect appearance. Additionally, IPL can be customized to individual skin types and conditions.

Who is an IPL candidate?

Any man or woman showing signs of skin damage caused by aging, sun exposure or other environmental factors.

What is IPL treatment like?

A cold gel is applied to the treatment area, and patients are given protective eyewear. During treatment, the smooth glass surface of the IPL hand piece is gently applied to the skin, and precise pulses of light penetrate the area being treated. The pain level is very minimal and can be further reduced by application of a topical anesthetic and/or cold air. Most patients experience a small stinging sensation. Procedures last about 10-20 minutes, and a complete program usually includes 2-6 sessions at approximately 3-4-week intervals.

What preparations must I make prior to treatment?

No changes to your normal routine are necessary before or after treatment. However, sun exposure must be limited prior to and following IPL treatment.

What will I look like immediately after IPL?

There may be a slight redness or blotchiness to the skin. This usually disappears after an hour. Age spots may darken soon after IPL treatments as a result of the light interacting with the pigment in your age spots, and may fade or flake off following your treatment. Other than that, there will be no outward signs of trauma to your skin.

Why do I need multiple treatments?

The goal with this procedure is to provide maximum benefit with minimal trauma and risk to the skin. Several treatments ensure gradual, natural-looking improvement. Results usually last a year or more.

What does IPL cost?

Costs vary according to the size of the area, severity of the condition and other factors. IPL is generally much less expensive than laser resurfacing and cosmetic surgeries. It is considered a cosmetic procedure and is not usually covered by insurance plans.

How can I find the right doctor for IPL treatment?

Our Find a Doctor tool can direct you to a qualified treatment provider in your area. It’s important to verify that the treatment provider uses the patented Lumenis IPL technology.
