What is the Difference between Spider Veins and Varicose Veins?

Spider veins are vessels that can be seen through the skin. They usually hold a blue-purple or red hue and are typically found near the face, chest and legs.

Varicose veins are larger, swollen vessels that can also be seen through the skin. While both are misshapen, twisted vessels; however varicose veins may cause more discomfort and health problems.

Causes and Symptoms

The common cause is poor circulation, or blood flow—which means varicose veins can be caused by too much blood in the veins. These misshapen veins are typically seen in pregnant women or women going through menopause, but can be found in both men and women of any age. People with jobs that require a lot of standing can also be subjected to varicose veins; which can feed (or create) smaller spider veins. Other known causes include swollen, or inflamed veins, blood clots, too much pressure on the area where the veins are appearing (can be due to obesity, pregnancy, etc.) and heredity.

Getting Rid of Spider and Varicose Veins

While spider veins fed by varicose veins can be difficult to treat through the latter options, you can, however, receive surgical treatments for varicose veins- which in turn can reduce the smaller spider veins. Worried about going under a knife? No need! Thanks to advances in technology, we can now also use laser therapy to get rid of misshapen, painful vessels.
